Millions of children are being frightened needlessly because of the outpouring of concern over missing children, according to Dr. Benjamin Spock. "Instead of spending money on fingerprinting children, we should be spending it on better child care," the child care expert said recently. "Most of the children kidnapped are abducted by their father, who no longer lives at home with the child, and the other major reason for missing children is the teenager running away from home {...} trying to get parents' attention."

Spock also said having children fingerprinted and placing pictures of missing children on milk cartons brings youngsters' attention to the world of crime at too young an age (Aspen CO Daily News, 1Oct85).
