Queensland authorities will be able to severely restrict the movements of convicted paedophiles under new laws. Police and Corrective Services Minister Judy Spence today said state cabinet had considered amendments to legislation, to be introduced to parliament later next year, to reduce the chances of paedophiles reoffending.

Under the laws, police would be able to approach the courts to obtain the power to impose restrictions on the activities of people on the state's child sex offender register. The changes would mean any convicted paedophile could be prevented from going within 200 metres of parks, children's playgrounds, child care centres, movie theatres, video arcades and other places children congregate. They could also be prohibited from entering shopping centres before and after school hours, joining any club or gaining employment where they could potentially come into contact with children. Anyone who breached these prohibition orders would face up to two years in jail, Ms Spence said.
