A mother killed her son and daughter because she thought the neighbors were plotting to abuse them. Julia Phillips suffocated Robert, 5, and strangled Claire, 3, as they and her husband slept. She then selected knives from the kitchen to kill herself, but was unable to bring herself to do it. When her husband awoke and, aware of her madness, asked about the children, she answered, "They are safe now." He went to look at them and his worst fears were confirmed. Mrs. Phillips had long suffered clinical levels of paranoia, believing for instance that BBC radio programs contained coded messages from her enemies. (From reports in The Guardian, February 27, 1990.)
