The founder of a paedophile group was among three men arrested yesterday in nationwide raids by 100 cops. Thomas O'Carroll, who set up the International Paedophile Child Emancipation group, was held at his Co Durham home. Members campaign for the legal right to have sex with children. Two other men were also seized - a 66-year-old in Surrey and a 64-year-old in Leicestershire. All were being questioned at local police stations last night on suspicion of conspiracy to distribute indecent images of children as young as six, distribution of indecent images and taking indecent images. The offences are punishable with a maximum sentence of up to ten years imprisonment. Officers raided the homes of six IPCE members. [...]

The swoops followed an undercover investigation lasting three years. The ranks of IPCE were infiltrated by a Met officer - who posed as a paedophile and collected evidence. The Met worked closely with forces in Holland, Germany and the US.

[...] Police believe O'Carroll, 60, has resurrected PIE and developed it into IPCE. Key IPCE figure Richard Turner, of Banbury, Oxfordshire - a former member of PIE and a close friend of O'Carroll - was one of the three other men to have their homes searched although they were not arrested.
