Critics who insist that boys loving men are always the victims of an impregnable balance of power might do well to consider the case of composer Richard Wagner and Ludwig II, The 18-year-old monarch of Bavaria. According to The Gay Book of Lists, the lovestruck Ludwig paid off Wagner's massive debts, provided him with housing and an income and staged extravagant productions of his operas in Munich, all in an attempt to keep the composer near him.
