That's why he [Gert Hekma, lecturer in gay and lesbian studies at the University of Amsterdam] concludes his book with a plea for sexual citizenship which comprises far more than the emancipation of homosexuality.

In brief, he advocates a society which in The Netherlands has been advocated for years by, for instance, the Dutch Society for Sexual Reform (NVSH). Specifically, this includes making sexuality in all its variations debatable; breaking out of the closed family culture; addressing the demarcations separating men and women, homosexuals and heterosexuals, young and older people; abandoning the unquestioned embedding of love, sex and procreation in marriage; creating public visibility for diverse forms of sexuality; and cultivating sexuality.

Hekma's interpretation of this last concept includes venturing respect - fully - and equipped with 'traffic rules' - onto the road of sexuality, and the creation of places and lessons in which sexuality becomes visible.
